Useful Apps for SAS Students

This is a list of useful Assistive Technology (AT) related apps for SAS students. Registered SAS students can make an appointment with the Assistive Technology Resource Center (ATRC) staff, who can give further details and provide comprehensive training in the use of all of the following apps. Each app is listed here by category, but some apps may be of use in more than one category.

Notetaking Apps


Otter AI is a speech recognition and text to speech program available in app and web-based versions. This application provides students a hands-free approach to notetaking. Students are able to press the record button and have Otter audio record the lecture while at the same time creating a text transcript of the recording. Students can also take a picture during the lecture and it will add itself to the notes timeline. At the end of the lecture, students can export text to another program such as Microsoft Word for additional editing and annotation.


NoteTalker

Notetalker

Notetalker is a notetaking, audio recording, and bookmarking app and software. This program allows students to use their computer or mobile device to record classroom lectures. Students are able to audio record the lecture while creating bookmarks, annotating lecture content, and capturing photo images on the recording timeline. At the end of the lecture, the student can export the file on to the computer for further editing if needed.


Audionote is an audio recording and notetaking program. This tool allow students to type or write the class lecture notes as they are being presented. The typed notes and the audio recorded notes are then synchronized with each other. This program also allows the student to engage in drawing and highlighting.


Notability is an audio recording and note taking app. This mobile app allows students to become creative in their note taking. Students are able to convert their hand written notes into text. This tool provides the platform for the student to create and draw diagrams, insert and mark-up images, and annotate their PDFs.


Organize your thoughts, discoveries, and ideas and simplify planning important moments in your life with your digital notepad. Microsoft OneNote lets you take notes on your phone and sync them across all your devices. It is available on iOS and Android.


Links the notes you take to the audio recorded when you take them. The result is a linked index of your recording that quickly provides invaluable audio context for your notes. Recording can be paused and restarted as necessary, with no time limit. Notes are linked with the recorded audio at the time they were taken. Tap notes to seek the linked audio. Students have the ability to customize the tools to their preference and manner of learning. They also have the ability to organize their note by headings, bookmarks, and highlights. Students have the option to view the text as the program tracks the words during the reading process, or they can simply listen.


EasyReader is an easy to use application that allows students to have their books, articles, and other documents read to them using its text-to-speech feature. Students have an option of more than 20 libraries to upload books to be read. They can also enjoy the ability to have the text highlight and track as reading is in progress.


VBookZ is a simple to use application that transform text into speech. Its text-to-speech feature allows students to read along using the word tracking feature. They also have more than a dozen languages to choose from with different voice options, pitch, and tone. The search feature makes it easy to search the accessible PDF for needed information.


ClaroPDF Pro is an accessible, reading and study PDF tool. Students can annotate, mark up and save PDF files, which retain full compatibility with Adobe Reader and other popular PDF apps. Have accessible text PDF files read aloud with a human quality voice and synchronized highlighting.


Natural Reader is text to speech app that is aimed more at personal use, this solution allows students to convert written text such as Word and PDF documents, eBooks, and web pages into human-like speech. With this app turn your reading material into interactive audiobooks so that you can save time, retain more information, and stay focused. Like your own personal reading assistant, Speechify can read books, documents, and articles while you cook, work out, commute, or do any other activity you can think of. It is available on iOS and Android.


The app can read aloud any pdf document that you have. Convert text to a natural-sounding voice. It is available on iOS.


SM Music Reader is a free and fully accessible app for everyone to read music scores, developed by Sao Mai Center for the Blind. It also includes a simple guitar tuner and the Metronome. Besides the functions to draw music scores and play MIDI files, SM Music Reader also offers full accessibility options to read notes with speech via screen readers and Braille showed on the connected Braille display via the SM Braille Viewer app. It is available on Android.

Visual Impairment


Seeing Ai is multifunctional tool that narrates the world around us. This application was design to help individuals with low vision recognize certain things in their environment. The program allows students to discriminate colors, light and darkness, and currency denomination. It allows for the identification and recognition of faces and places. The student can also use the application to OCR documents and text to be read.


KNFB Reader is an application that converts text into speech and braille. This program allows students to take a picture of a document or upload a PDF file and have KNFB Reader convert the text into an accessible format that can be read immediately. The student also have the option to highlight text to be exported or save.


Be My Eyes is a volunteer driven program that provides remote assistance to individuals with visual impairment. The program pairs sighted volunteers with persons who are visual impaired and need some visual assistance. By logging on to Be My Eyes, the visual impaired person allows the volunteer to see their environment and describe it to them.


TapTapSee is a mobile application designed to use the mobile device camera and Voiceover features to capture a picture or video of an event and describe it for the user. The application is design for the blind or visually impaired individual. This easy to use application allows the student to double-tap on the right of the mobile device screen to take a picture and double-tap on the left for video images. This program is able to analyze and identify images in two and three dimensions.


Claro MagX is an application that can transform your mobile device into a HD visual magnifier. This app allows low vision users to take their regular mobile device and use it as a magnifier for reading and seeing things they would not be able to see. It provide users the convenience and portability when using their phone.


Microsoft Lens trims, enhances, and makes pictures of whiteboards and documents readable. Microsoft Lens can be used to convert images to PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files, digitize printed or handwritten text, and save to OneNote, OneDrive, or your local device. You can even import images that are already on your device using Gallery. It is available on iOS and Android.


Lookout uses computer vision to assist people with low vision or blindness to get things done faster and more easily. Using your phone’s camera, Lookout makes it easier to get more information about the world around you and do daily tasks more efficiently like sorting mail, putting away groceries, and more. It is available on Android.


Color ID is an app that can help someone who is blind or has low vision identify colors. The person just uses the camera to point at an object and the app will speak the names of colors in real-time. Color ID can be downloaded on Android.


Big Keys is exactly what it says. This simple application’s primary function is to allow customization of the size of the keys of a mobile phone's keyboard and emoji. Along with this, other features even include a numeric keypad, keyboard customization themes, and color contrast for easier visibility. It is available on iOS.


Envision AI is a must-have for anyone with limited vision. The app can recognize faces, quick scan, and read from any text or surface like menus, books, signs, etc., and even handwritten text. Supporting up to 60 languages, Envision AI requires a monthly or yearly subscription. It is available on iOS and Android.

Automated Speech Transcription


Live Transcribe is an Android accessibility app built by Google for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This app uses Google's automatic speech recognition technology to perform real-time transcription of speech to text on your screen, enabling users to participate in conversations. You can also type your response on the screen.

Sound Amplification


Sound Amplifier is an Android app that allows users to amplify and filter sound to provide an enhanced listening experience.


Petralex acts as an external hearing aid. Using a mic to take in surrounding sound, the app is designed to make it easy for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to gain access to sound in absence of hearing aids. The simple interface is easy to use, navigate and operate. It is available on iOS.

Communication


Proloquo2go is an Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) program. This program uses pictures and descriptive words to identify items. This tool helps strengthen communication and language skills.


ClaroCom is an AAC program that assists with verbal expressions. Students can use the on-screen keyboard to compose words and phrases. Its word and phrase prediction feature takes an account of frequently used words and expressions and generates predictions as a word or a phrase. The program also help when searching for a word using the search feature.


Look to Speak is an Android app from experiments with Google which enables people to use their eyes to select pre-written phrases and have them spoken aloud. It is available on Android.


Microsoft Translator is a free, personal translation app for more than 70 languages, to translate text, voice, conversations, camera photos, and screenshots. It is available on iOS and Android.


RogerVoice is a unique world-first technology that assists Deaf & hard of hearing individuals by providing free captioned cellphone calls. The app itself uses a simple interface to allow the caller to speak while voice recognition technology provides a real-time transcript of what the other individual is saying. This simple app can make phone calls easier, though accuracy is dependent on audio quality. It is available on iOS and Android.


The Voice Access app for Android lets you control your device with spoken commands. Use your voice to open apps, navigate, and edit text hands-free. It is available on Android.


This is an innovative app that enables students with communication difficulties to say what they want, using a sequence of words, sounds, and images. It can be configured to feature certain images and play certain sounds, so it can be set up for a particular student to best aid them. It is available on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows.

Organization


Microsoft To Do helps you organize and simplify your plans, whether it's for work, school, or home. To Do is free and available across the web and iOS, Mac, Android, and Windows devices.


This is a simple “Pie chart” style timer that provides a customizable countdown with a strong visual design that can provide high contrast colors for visually impaired users. The app is also suitable for most users with a choice of alarm tones when time limit is reached.

Math writing app that assists users with dyslexia and dysgraphia by allowing them to input a wide variety of math notation onto a clearly defined grid template.

American Sign Language (ASL)
Video Relay Service (VRS)

The following apps provide free ASL VRS services funded By the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to qualified individuals who may be Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The apps allow a user to sign to an interpreter who then provides communication with another user. The service can work in both directions, with individuals who do not use sign language being able to communicate with those who do via the ASL interpreter using a toll free number.

P3 Mobile is an on-the-go Video Relay Service app for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The app assists someone who is deaf or hard of hearing make and receiving Video Phone calls anywhere using a Wi-Fi or data connection. P3 Mobile can be downloaded on iOS and Android.


Z5 Mobile is the on-the-go VRS (Video Relay Service) app that makes it easy for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to make and receive VP calls anywhere using a Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection. It is available on iOS and Android.



The Hand Talk app is a pocket translator that automatically translates oral languages both in text and audio to sign languages, such as English to ASL or Portuguese to Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) through artificial Intelligence.
